Excursions
See and experience regional, cultural, and historical sites with your fellow members! Excursions generally include a boxed lunch and a semi-private tour of our destination including behind-the-scenes experiences.
We’re going on a road trip!
Join us as we travel the back roads to discover the small towns of Old Thomas County. Go behind the scenes of historic buildings, churches, and homes. Sample the local cuisine during lunch. Discover what makes our area unique!
Tours meet at the Thomasville History Center at 9:30am to load onto the bus. Separate drivers can meet the group at the first tour stop by 10am. The bus will arrive back at the History Center by 4pm.
Guests are asked to wear comfortable walking clothes and closed-toe shoes. Some ventures may involve wandering off the beaten path. Water will be available, but it is recommended to bring a water bottle. Lunch and additional purchases made during the Road Trip are not included in the ticket price. We’re starting our road trip adventures by heading to Quitman, Georgia! Quitman is currently the county seat of Brooks County, our neighbors to the east — but that wasn’t always the case. Originally this half of Brooks County was part of Thomas County and included early villages and towns like Tallokas, Quitman, and Grooverville. In 1858, this section of the county and a piece from Lowndes County were brought together to form Brooks County. Many of the original families from this area are still around today.

Our second road trip takes us to Metcalfe, Georgia! Metcalfe is just to the south of Thomasville before reaching the border with Florida. This town is just a few miles away from the first church established in Thomas County, Springhill Methodist. While people settled the area as early as the 1830s, the town was not incorporated until 1888 when it was added as a stop on the rail road.
