DESCRIPTION:Homesteads and Hope | Tuesday\, September 8\, 2026\, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nJoin Dr. John Cable as he discusses the topic of his next book: Homesteads and Hope: Georgia’s Midcentury Experiments in Communal Farming. Dr. Cable received his doctorate from Florida States University and leads classes in the History Department at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.\n\n\n\nIn the 1930s and 1940s — amid depression and war — hundreds of Georgians joined planned farming communities. Dr. Cable will give an overview of resettlement communities run by the federal government\, including Irwinville (Irwin County)\, Wolf Creek (Grady County)\, and the all-African American Flint River Farms project (Macon County) as well as non-government farming communities like Koinonia (Sumter County) and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit (Rockdale County).\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch; light refreshments will be provided.\n\nPart of a collaborative Bicentennial series presented by the Thomasville History Center\, Jack Hadley Black History Museum\, and Pebble Hill Plantation.

DESCRIPTION:Excursion: Boston\, GA | Saturday\, September 12\, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\n\nHit the road with the Thomasville History Center on March 14 as we continue our 2026 Excursions series with a day trip to Boston\, Georgia. Explore historic towns of Old Thomas County\, go behind the scenes of churches and homes\, and discover what makes our region unique alongside your fellow history lovers. \n\n\n\nWhile Boston may be the second oldest town in the county\, it’s current location was not where its founders originally started. In the 1860s the community shifted the town two miles down the road to be closer to the railroad station. Formally incorporated in 1870\, Boston has since remained a bustling town complete with a Carnegie Library that still serves the community’s appetite for literacy. The town supports not only a strong agricultural community but also a thriving business sector in their historic downtown. \n\n\n\n\nTransportation is provided\, with the option to drive separately if preferred. Lunch is not included.
